Father Judge High School Hawaiian Shirt

Description:

A lot of the local High Schools were doing fundraisers by designing and selling Hawaiian Shirts. I thought this would be a great idea and approached my alma mater with it. They said to send them a sketch. I told them I’ll do you one better and sent them a working mock-up from Illustrator which they could then send to their print shop. Mind you, I had never done anything to this magnitude in Illustrator before. Being resourceful and determined, I looked up and found Professor Jim Kinney’s tutorial for one of his classes. Professor Kinney, known on YouTube as OnesAndZeros, had a very detailed video which was exactly what I was looking for to advance my skill set. The video Adding Details to the Hawaiian Shirt is a must-see!

Anyway, this was the most challenging Illustrator project for me to date. I had to use several techniques, which were new to me, in order to design the shirt. I ensured my design incorporated our school’s branded red, white, and blue colors along with the helmet logo and shield.

First, I created a base layer which was an image of my actual Hawaiian shirt. Then I created a custom swatch that included Hawaiian flowers and leaves utilizing the branding colors. After the floral swatch was done, I added our logo and shield. Once the custom swatch was completed, I began to use the pen tool to trace sections of the underlying base image, applying the custom swatch to each trace. I repeated the tracing and swatch technique in a clockwise pattern until the shirt was completed. In the end, there were over 40 layers! Each layer was labeled with location indicators (e.g.,  L sleeve inside pattern, L sleeve inside color, etc.) in order to keep the layers manageable.

Level 2 Gamification Journeyman Guild Logo

Description:

During my Level 2 Gamification Journeyman certification, our cadre was placed into guilds. Each guild was tasked with coming up with a name and logo design based on our name and gamification. We were originally assigned 5 members. My guild members tasked me with coming up with a design based on a maze, the island of Barbados, and the guild name (the first letter of each of the first names). The reason there are two logos is because one of the candidates had to drop and we had to quickly rename and redesign the logo. Luckily, the layers were in good order and I was able to quickly remove flowers, animals, and letters to create the new logo.

In Illustrator, I created individual layers starting with the background layer. Then each layer (map, maze, flowers, animals, and finally the text) was added. I used the fill and stroke tool on the flowers. For the tree, I used the artistic option. The animals were brought in as pngs and added to their appropriate layers.

Multimedia Production Course

Description:

During my Master’s in Instructional Technology at Bloomsburg University, I took a Multimedia Production course. For this course, we were to create various pieces of media. The images shown here represent 3 of those pieces.

RoseMarc Studios Logo – For our Illustrator project, we had to design a logo and demonstrate the use of layers and paths. I liked this design so much it has been my logo ever since and hence, the site you are on now!

Blended Images – For our Photoshop project, we were required to take 3 or more images and blend them together into a single image. The techniques included layers, masking, adjustment curves, and color adjustments, just to name a few. In my love of all things Monty Python, I added a little humor to the images, which my professor actually found funny.

Podcast Flyer – For our Podcast project, we were required to create any podcast we wanted (interview, audiobook, discussion, etc.). In addition, we had to create a flyer for the podcast in either Photoshop or Illustrator. I chose to do an audiobook and create my flyer in Illustrator. Since I had read the big brag (with voices) to my daughter, this was the one I chose. I’ve included the podcast below for your listening pleasure.
